Spring camping trip in Slovenia and Istria
You know that feeling when the planned vacation finally comes when did you plan the perfect trip, book your accommodation, pay on time, but the weather decides to spoil everything because according to the forecast there will be a few days of heavy rain?
With a camping trip forget about this feeling of powerlessness due to adverse weather forecasts because if there is rain on one side, there is certainly Sun on the other!
This is how we plan for the recent Easter holidays how we will enjoy nature, how we will ride bikes in pale vrijeme but time decided differently and it turned out – genius!
On the first day, it rained in half of Europe, so we decided to use the rainy weather to visit the Postojna Cave (cave).
Postojna Cave is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Slovenia and one of the largest and most famous caves in the world. Located near the town of Postojna, it is about 24 kilometers long and formed of Stony limestone. What makes Postojna Cave special are its magnificent underground spaces, caves and galleries, as well as rare geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. One of the most famous features is the “Great Hall”, an impressive Hall measuring 80 metres long, 40 metres wide and 50 metres high. In addition, Postojna Cave is known for its diverse underground fauna, including endemic species, such as the Human Fish (Proteus anguinus), which has become a kind of symbol of the cave. Visitors can explore the Postojna pit by taking a train through the underground tunnels and corridors, which is a unique experience, especially for children. During the ride, the guides provide interesting information about the geology, history and biology of the cave. The Postojna Cave is open to visitors all year round.
What we could notice is that this cave is a great attraction that attracts many tourists, so there are frequent crowds, and groups for sightseeing the cave may be too large (noise, uncontrolled children, the guide is not completely heard.).
In addition to Postojna pit in the whole park there are some interesting sights that can be seen such as Prejam Castle, secret rooms of Hotel Jama, Vivari, etc. Unfortunately this time we did not get to see all of the above due to bad weather, but we will be back soon in an expanded edition!
What we have to praise is the website of Postojna JAMA which is very transparent and useful considering that they have clearly defined schedule times of visiting the pit and other sights.
As for the campsites around this cave, we cannot write our experiences because we spent the night parked in the backyard of our friends who live near the cave.
The next day we continued on the same topic so we headed 20 kilometers further to Škocjanski jama. This cave is something really special and it is so different from all the other caves we have seen so far, this cave simply takes your breath away.
Škocjan cave is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Europe, and in 1986. it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This pit is amazing because of its huge size. Within it flows the river, which has carved out magnificent underground spaces over the centuries. One of the most striking parts of the pit is the Great Hall which is almost 200 meters wide and about 100 meters high.
The Scotian pit is also an important habitat for diverse plant and animal life, including some endemic species. There is also the “Great Underground Canyon” phenomenon, which is one of the largest underground canyons in the world.
Apart from its natural beauty, Skocjanska jama is also a cultural treasure, with its rich history and mythology. Legends and stories related to this pit are deeply rooted in Slavic culture.
The tour of this pit is somewhat more challenging than Postojna because it has numerous stairs so it may not be for smaller children. In any case, great praise for the guide who at one moment showed us what it was like for people when they first entered the pit – he turned off the lights in the Great Hall. We've been swept by the thrills…
We will definitely be back again, perhaps on a more advanced tour of the pit!
