Advent trip to Vienna-adventure camper
Where to go on a weekend getaway? The answer is self-evident – Vienna is an ideal place for a family trip and enjoying the sparkling Christmas fairs, the smell of cooked wine and gingerbread and spectacular decorations.
Weekend in Vienna we planned a week in advance and then two days before departure disappointment-weather forecast announces rain in Vienna 🌧 Pretraž Pretraž we search alternative destinations, but all the same – rain everywhere!Friday afternoon we study the forecast once again and tadaaam – rain is only on Friday night and other days cloudy! This is followed by quick packing, grocery shopping and, as usual, filling the cabinets and refrigerators of the campers as if we were going for 2 weeks, not 2 and a half days.
At about 6 p.m. We finally leave and enter the already well-known location in Google Maps: Motorhome-Parking Space Viennaideal campsite in the heart of Vienna. Since last time we did not write too much about the camp itself, this time we give it a comprehensive review, we believe that many will benefit…

We arrive at the camp after 10pm and wonder how many campers are there. Fortunately we find a place and in 5 min the camper is parked (flat plots), connected to electricity, heating works, it is warm like home and the children are ready to sleep because tomorrow we have a hard day…
We wake up in the morning, and the sun is waiting for us outside doručak starting breakfast and getting ready for adventure around town! The highlight of this day should be the evening skating on Wiener Eistraum - ice rink in front of the city hall, and in order to make skating perfect and comfortable, we carry our skates, read: Everyone carries their skates in a backpack on their back all day! Although skates are not so light at all, no one complained that they are difficult to wear!
From the camp to the subway is 270 meters, 3 minutes easy walk. We can freely say that it is also one of the attractions of Vienna for children because it is fun to drive underground!
The first destination was 🎶 Haus der Musik - music magic, a museum that turns music into an adventure! Literally! What particularly impressed us in this museum is the fact that Vienna's rich music history is intertwined with modern technology, so both children and US adults were interested in absolutely everything!
Each of the great Viennese composers is dedicated to a large room, so we can see the room of Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, the instruments they played on, the letters they wrote, We can listen to the compositions they composed, various interesting facts about their lives.but this history is not only exhibited in glass showcases, but with the help of technology, the stories of composers literally come to life through sound and visual installations.
House of music it does not allow you to remain just an observer – it invites you to participate so you can:
- conduct virtual Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras and experience the thrill of leading one of the best orchestras in the world. Your movements determine the pace and dynamics, and technology turns your enthusiasm into music (or at least trying);
- experiment with acoustics and sounds in interactive settings that explain how vibrations become melodies that touch us into the soul;
- on the floor dedicated to the future, with advanced digital tools you can create your own compositions and explore new music genres…
Although at the first mention The House of music my companions were not too enthusiastic, after this visit that definitely changed.
Whether you are a fan of classical music, a lover of new technologies or both, Haus der Musik it provides something for everyone. This is a place where old and New merge into perfect harmony, opening the door to the world of music in a way that is fun, educational and inspiring. Definitely our great recommendation to visit!!
We paid 35 euros for a family ticket for two adults and two children.
After the music, we went to 🎭 "Time Travel Vienna“. At the entrance, we were greeted by crowds and notice that we had to wait 35 minutes until the start of the next free tour. We pay tickets for the four of US – 80 euros, quite high price for an attraction in the basement for an hour, but we believe that the content should be at the price level so it is not a problem!
At the very beginning of the tour, Big questionnaires over their heads: holograms that talk to each other, and that should be interesting, we just don't know who... going further, bigger questionnaires over their heads…
Time Travel Vienna at first glance, it sounds like the perfect experience – an interactive walk through the history of Vienna with the help of modern technology. But as with any tourist attraction, not everything is as perfect as it looks in the brochures. Here are some key reasons why this experience may not delight every visitor:
The first and most important question is: who is this person? Children, adults? To clarify, 80% of our group were Croats. The content is in German, but there are also audio guides with translation, but guess what-there is no translation in Croatian (although there are obviously very many Croats, Slovenes,...). We listened to the English translation. The younger children did not understand anything, the older children also had difficulty understanding, which caused boredom in them.
The attraction is replete with dramatic effects, 5D projections and holograms seemingly designed to impress younger audiences. Children will love the simulations and visual spectacle, but the more complex parts of history are often too difficult to understand, even with the help of a guide. On the other hand, adult visitors may feel that the content is too superficial and “child-friendly”, which can cause feelings of dissatisfaction.
As long as the idea Time Travel Vienna certainly intriguing - the history of Vienna presented in a modern, interactive way-the question “Who is the target audience?"remains unclear. During the tour, there may be some confusion as to whether this experience is child-friendly, adult-friendly, or perhaps none.
If you're thinking about visiting, keep in mind that understanding the content will largely depend on your ability to track in a foreign language. Otherwise, it may be better to explore the history of Vienna through other, more accessible and cheaper attractions. 🏛️
After completing the tour in Time Travel we go out on the crowded streets of Vienna and – it's already dark, which meant only one thing-it's time to slide!! To the general delight of our youngest family member we go to Rathausplatz where there is a huge advent fair and a huge beautiful ice rink: ⛸️❄️ Wiener Eistraum - a real Holiday Spell On Ice. We make our way through huge amounts of people and finally get to the ticket office for the ice rink. We buy tickets (for 2 adults and two children we paid 30 euros, but we had our skates so we didn't have to rent theirs – remember the backpacks from the beginning of this day? ).
What about the ice rink? A truly magical experience on ice! Although the rink is quite large, it was expected to be full on Saturday night, so we armed ourselves with patience and adjusted to the crowd. "Thanks" to geniuses driving in the opposite direction to the others, there were also crashes. But all in all great fun for big and small!
After skating, we treated ourselves to Vienna Fair delicacies (read-strengthen the kilos and lighten the wallets) such as well-known sausages, boiled wine in sweet Cups in the form of boots, and for dessert were strawberries topped with chocolate. It's a real calorie richness! 🌭🍖 🍷☕✨🍓🍫
The return to the camp and campers was at a slower pace due to fatigue after walking all day, but full of experiences that will be retold for a long time. The bunk bed came down at about the same time as the baby's eyelids (read immediately upon arrival at the camper).
In the morning, we were greeted by rain that was not announced anywhere in the forecast, but we knew that it would not last long, so we had a light breakfast and started to prepare for further adventures in Vienna. Mom had a plan to go to Schönbrunnthe children went back to The Natural History Museum where we were earlier this year. We granted their wishes and went again to this temple of evolution and the history of the Earth. We do not have to explain the fascination with this museum too much, suffice it to say that the girls said that they want to come again the next time we visit Vienna. We wrote more about the Museum of Natural History in the last blog about Vienna so for more info: https://www.kamperi.hr/skolski-praznici-u-becu-avantura-kamperom/
Full of renewed impressions and made steps we return to the camper and slowly prepare to go home thinking about what we will visit next when we come to Vienna again…
To summarize, advent in Vienna by camper is truly a special adventure and an unforgettable experience that is still talked about. What would we do differently? We would definitely not go on weekends, but on weekdays when there is much less traffic. If your work or obligations allow you, experience advent in Vienna during the working days of the week and enjoy this beautiful city in its most beautiful edition – calm and magical!
If this is impossible for you, arm yourself with patience and go on an adventure on the weekend – as do we 😅
Keep reading us, and when you get the chance, surprise your loved ones, rent a camper with us and take them on the adventure of a lifetime! Believe me, the adventure of the camper will be talked about for a long, long time.…
